Free GPS Tracking System Empowers Uganda’s Boda-Boda Riders, Thanks to Hongera Saana
In Uganda's bustling urban and peri-urban areas, boda-boda motorcycles serve as more than just transportation—they're a lifeline for thousands who depend on them for daily income. Yet, riders face constant threats, including theft, road accidents, and security challenges that put their livelihoods at risk. Recognizing these dangers, Hongera Saana Uganda, a presidential initiative, has launched a transformative GPS tracking program to bolster rider safety. Through strategic collaboration with the Uganda Police and other security agencies, this initiative equips riders with free GPS devices and emergency support, setting a new benchmark for safety in the informal transport sector.
The program’s real impact lies in accessibility. Previously, the cost of GPS devices and subscriptions made this technology unattainable for most riders. Now, thousands have received reliable trackers free of charge, enabling real-time location monitoring, swift emergency responses, and rapid recovery in case of theft. With 24/7 support and community policing efforts, riders not only gain protection but also build stronger relationships with law enforcement—turning safety into shared responsibility. Riders like Alex Musoke speak of feeling “watched over,” with their motorcycles—and livelihoods—finally safeguarded.
Looking ahead, Hongera Saana Uganda plans to scale up nationwide, expand rider education, and develop special programs for women, who often face heightened risks. By blending technology, security, and grassroots engagement, this initiative is reshaping public safety and economic stability for Uganda’s boda-boda sector. It’s not just a story of GPS—it’s a story of empowerment, resilience, and restoring dignity to a vital workforce.
